4th scientific session 'Viral Evolution and Evasion'

Chair Professor Albert Osterhaus (University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Germany) will be joined by Professor Derek J. Smith (University of Cambridge, UK) and Dr Sylvie C. Briand (WHO, Switzerland) to discuss mechanisms of viral evolution and evasion, how viral evolution is predicted and used to inform vaccine and therapeutics development, and the requirements and challenges of implementing viral monitoring systems.

The event will finish with a 15-minute live Q&A with the audience.

At the end of this scientific session, attendees should be able to:

  • Improve their knowledge of how to assess the evolutionary and evasive potential of current and emerging viruses
  • Gain perspectives on the latest techniques used to predict viral evolution and the potential these have for the ‘future-proofing’ of vaccines and therapeutics against resistance
  • Advance the knowledge of key requirements and challenges to implementing successful surveillance systems based on real-world examples
