Health at Glance: Europe 2024

The 2024 edition of Health at a Glance: Europe examines key health challenges and how to develop stronger, more resilient health systems against a rapidly changing health landscape: new technology and AI, AMR, an ageing society with multiple health needs.

The report includes a special focus on the interconnected topics of health workforce shortages and healthy longevity. Healthy longevity is defined as living a long life in good physical and mental health.

The dual demographic challenge of an ageing population and an ageing health workforce reflects the urgent need to take actions to increase training and retention in health sector jobs and to use more productively the available human resources.

The report addresses a number of risk factors that impact people's health, highlighting the importance of enhancing prevention throughout the life course, supporting mental health at all ages and empowering individuals to manage their own health.

By creating a more productive workforce as well as a higher labour force participation, health systems can boost GDP and enhance the EU’s competitiveness.
