Launch report of the MEP Interest Group on Life Course Immunisation
On 30 January 2025, we officially launched the MEP Interest Group on Life Course Immunisation (LCI) at the European Parliament — a big step forward in strengthening vaccination policies across all life stages in the EU. This group brings together policymakers, healthcare professionals, and researchers to promote more equitable and sustainable immunisation strategies across Europe.
The discussions on the day were focused on how we can improve vaccination access and coordination. Some of the key areas that stood out were the need to integrate vaccination more firmly into the European Health Union, expand the role of pharmacists in delivering vaccines, and ensure we have a standardised adult vaccination schedule across member states. There was also a strong push to make better use of the European Health Data Space (EHDS) — a platform that could significantly improve real-time data sharing on vaccine uptake and effectiveness.
What was clear from all the speakers, including MEPs and public health experts, is that there’s a real need for stronger political commitment, sustainable funding, and better public trust in vaccines. One of the big takeaways was the importance of expanding vaccination beyond traditional healthcare settings, like workplaces or pharmacies, and addressing vaccine hesitancy through clear, evidence-based communication. Looking ahead, the group is determined to drive collaboration across sectors, align national policies with broader EU standards, and ultimately ensure that every European has lifelong access to the protection vaccines provide.
