Cardiovascular health: MEPs respond to EU Safe Hearts Plan
On Wednesday 24 June 2026, the European Parliament Public Health Committee adopted its response to the EU Safe Hearts Plan.
The European Commission's Safe Hearts Plan seeks to address the key challenges across the EU related to cardiovascular diseases, focusing on the special needs of vulnerable population groups such as children and young people and women. This includes a proposal for a Council recommendation on vaccination against respiratory infections as a preventive measure for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), recognising the growing body of evidence linking respiratory infections to CVDs and other Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
In its response to the Safe Hearts Plan, the Public Health Committee calls for a coordinated approach to preventing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and their interconnected risk factors and co-morbidities, including all major non-communicable diseases including diabetes, hypertension, cancer, chronic kidney disease, obesity and many others.
