Health Union Fellowship Opening Ceremony

ESWI attended the opening ceremony of the Health Union Fellowship (HUF), organised by the European Commission. The HUF is a capacity-building programme designed for health policy professionals from across Europe to learn about EU health policy, exchange experiences, strengthen cooperation, and build a strong, lasting network.

The event brought together policymakers, public health experts, and young professionals to strengthen Europe’s healthcare systems and prepare for future health challenges. European Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi highlighted the importance of preparedness, innovation, and shifting focus from treatment to prevention, while stressing that Europe’s systems must be ready to scale and support scientific breakthroughs. Dr Hans Kluge, WHO’s Regional Director for Europe,  encouraged Fellows to reinvent health systems, recover pandemic-related losses to Sustainable Development Goals, and leverage science and solidarity. Sandra Gallina, Director-General of DG Health and Food Safety,  and other contributors showcased the collaborative and human-centred spirit of the programme, emphasising kindness, mentorship, and evidence-based policy. Key initiatives discussed included the New Biotech Act, tackling cardiovascular disease, and promoting healthier diets through innovative approaches. The Fellowship reinforced the essential role of Europe’s emerging health leaders in shaping resilient, innovative, and people-centred healthcare systems.
