Europe strengthens lab defences against key pathogens

ESWI Chair Colin Russell was featured in a Medscape article on the EU reference laboratories aiming to improve disease surveillance data, including respiratory viruses. These laboratories will provide scientific advice and technical support to national reference laboratories, while helping to improve monitoring and alert systems across Europe.

The the EU reference laboratories (EURLs) is part of the Commission’s work to coordinate robust preparedness, early warning and response mechanisms for health crises, as part of a strong European Health Union. EURLs do not have a global mandate; they are designed to support national reference laboratories in EU member states and promote alignment in diagnostics, testing, surveillance, and reporting across Europe.
