Mandatory housing measures introduced across a large swathe of England to try and curb the spread of avian influenza are being lifted from today (15 May).
The move comes following the release of a risk assessment indicating that infection levels in wild birds and poultry have reduced. In some parts of England, a housing order had been in place since December 2024.
Now poultry and other captive birds will no longer need to be kept housed, meaning that they can be kept outside once more – unless they are in areas designated as zones where there has been a recent outbreak of H5N1 avian flu, where compulsory housing measures will apply.
