"Viral respiratory infections remain a significant challenge for European health systems, particularly among older adults and people with chronic conditions. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) contribute to lower respiratory tract infections, hospitalisation, intensive care admissions and mortality in older populations. Yet both viruses remain underdiagnosed and under-recognised in routine clinical practice and national epidemiological data. While RSV has gained increasing policy attention due to the availability of adult vaccination and prophylactic options, HMPV remains less visible, less systematically monitored and less well understood, despite evidence of substantial clinical burden.
This EHMA white paper, assesses receptivity to improving surveillance and testing for RSV and HMPV across Europe, with a focus on older adults. The study combines a structured country-by-country literature review, a targeted expert survey across France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, and validation with a multi-country expert focus group. Its aim is practical: to map existing surveillance and testing arrangements, identify common barriers and opportunities, and develop actionable recommendations for health managers and policymakers.
