#IDCBreathAndBeyond calls for respiratory virus prevention to be fully integrated into NCD care

Throughout the 2026-2027 winter flu season, the #IDCBreathAndBeyond campaign will focus on the growing evidence linking respiratory virus infections and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) including cardiovascular disease, COPD, diabetes, cancer and asthma.

Did you know that certain NCDs can increase the severity of a respiratory infection, while even mild infections can cause the onset, progression or exacerbation of NCDs?

ESWI is proud to be leading the Interdisciplinary Disease Collaboration on Respiratory Infections and Non-communicable Diseases (IDC), which aims to strengthen our understanding of this two-way link, raise awareness, and ensure that respiratory virus prevention is fully integrated into NCD management and care.

From World Heart Day (29 September 2026) through to World Cancer Day (4 February 2027), we will spotlight expert champions to explain why respiratory virus prevention, including vaccination, should be a priority for those living with, at risk of, or caring for individuals with NCDs.

"Influenza can increase the risk of major cardiovascular diseases. Vaccination against flu has a pivotal role in the prevention of cardiovascular events, such as heart failure."

Tor Biering-Sørensen - University of Copenhagen, Denmark

ESWI welcomes the EU Safe Hearts Plan, which recognises vaccination against infections as an effective measure to prevent cardiovascular complications in high-risk groups. It is important that we now ensure delivery of the actions outlined in this plan, including the proposal for a Council recommendation on vaccination against respiratory infections as a preventive measure for cardiovascular diseases.

“A flu jab is healthy ageing in action. By reducing severe illness and its wider consequences, including cardiovascular events and loss of function, it helps older people protect their independence and keep living the lives they value.”
